34. The trial of Philip of MahdiyyaWhat are the points of difference and similarity between the accounts of Ibn al-Athir, Ibn Khaldun and Romuald of Salerno? Was the account of Ibn al-Athir made independently of Ibn Khaldun's? Are the versions consistent, credible and convincing? What literary touches and dramatic flourishes are there? What do the accounts reveal of the roles of the eunuchs and their relationship with the king? What is the role of Roger? Does he appear to be in control of the situation? What was Philip's real 'crime'? Was it a religious issue? Or a political one? What was the objective of Philip's naval mission to Buna and how does this fit in with the wider context of Normans and Almohad ambitions in North Africa? To what extent was Philip's trial a turning point in Norman Sicilian political history?
Introductory readingTranslations of the trial are to be found in the accounts of Romuald of Salerno, Ibn al-Athīr and Ibn Khaldun
